FanGirl a site for all things sports!

FanGirl

Number One Fan…the remix.

I thought I was done with sports…nope. Project 1:A is moved into a higher fidelity for project 1:B. So while “sports” is canceled elsewhere, “sports” is very much alive and well for me. Got it. And a good reminder to, my disinterest in sports is helping me to create a better app for my users. Got it.

First things first, let’s make this an app for the people not just my one initial user, Elva. I started with casting a net out to my fellow classmates. I got to chat with Gayla and Erin. Both ladies love sports and enjoy following their favorite teams/players. Awesome! I began to ask them how they currently track them. Erin shared that she reluctantly uses the MLB app but it’s not great. Gayla shared that she uses the ESPN app but it’s also not great. At this point I asked them what they wanted in a sports app? Both shared that they wanted a schedule, where/how to watch, score details and game updates. This is great…it’s all the same things Elva originally wanted. Erin also wanted options to watch at a bar with other fans. I also asked my roommate a few questions, she mentioned she would want to sync the schedule with her calendar to be able to see it alongside her work schedule. Everyone mentioned that they would want to follow but not “like” certains teams and players. This is a great place to start.

I downloaded the apps my interviewees mentioned and began to sift through the mess. Gah, these apps are cluttered with tons of info the ladies didn’t mention wanting. I went ahead and asked them to check out what I was seeing. They all mentioned it was too much and looked terrible. I began to ask a few more questions and realized what these ladies were seeing and saying  is these apps are made for men by men. I began to wonder if there was a market for a sports app designed for women. I’m not thinking pink and roses. Just a lighter design with only to info the fan is interested in. Enter, fanGirl.

Cool, now I have a direction. I relooked at my original user flow and was glad to see that the flow still held true. Check. As I revisited my original wireframes I still  liked the basic idea but realized I needed to add a few more pages to get all the info needed for my user. Cool. As I started to build out my new wireframes I focused on rounded corners, light colored backgrounds, and airy design patterns.

After creating I revisited my user and got a good response with a few modifications. I got them fixed and was ready for my presentation.

After all is said and done, do I love my app? Not so much…haha. I feel like I still have a long way to go with it. I still don’t love my final design but I think with more testing and more skill, I could get closer to the app I have in my mind. I’m looking forward to my skill catching up with my vision.
